Leader Online Desk: Officials of the Food Safety Department on Friday (Dec 31) sealed a protein powder selling center in Madhavaram, where breast milk was being sold. A shop owner with a license to sell protein powder was illegally selling human milk at Rs 500 per 50 ml bottle, a food safety official said.
Last week, the Central Licensing Authority had received a complaint about human milk being stored for sale in Madhavaram. After that raids were conducted and about 50 bottles of breast milk were seized from the shop. This is the first time that breast milk is being sold in Chennai.
We found human milk stored in bottles. Samples of the milk bottles were then sent to a laboratory for testing, during which the phone numbers of the donors were found. After this, we sealed the shop after taking appropriate action against him, said the officials of the Food Safety Department.
