'Changed my religion to marry someone from another religion': Sharmila Tagore had said- Parents had received threatening telegrams before marriage

Actress Sharmila Tagore and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi got married after dating for some time. At the time when both of them got married, things like inter-religion marriage were unheard of. Sharmila also had to change her religion for marriage. After this, Mansoor Ali gave her a new name Ayesha.

Talking to Simi Garewal in an old interview, Sharmila Tagore had said, 'It was neither easy nor difficult. It was necessary to face and understand it. You cannot be too careless about it. I was not very religious before marriage. Now I feel I know more about Hinduism and Islam.'

Sharmila was nervous in the first meeting with her mother-in-law. In this interview, Sharmila also talked about her mother-in-law Nawab Begum Sajida Sultan. She told that they shared a good bond with each other. She said, 'When I met Amma for the first time, I was definitely nervous. She asked me- what do you think of my son? To this I said that I like him. Then she asked what do you intend to do next? I replied that I don't know yet, I have just met him.'

'I received death threats for marrying someone from another religion'
In an old interview with Barkha Dutt, Sharmila had revealed that when she had decided to marry someone from another religion, she had received death threats. She had said, 'When the wedding was taking place in Kolkata, my parents were getting telegrams that bullets would be fired at the wedding. Because of this, Tiger's family also started worrying a bit. However, nothing happened at the wedding and later at the reception.'
