In the 77-year history of Cannes, 32 Indian films received 39 nominations, out of which 20 won awards.

The 77th Cannes Film Festival is being organized in Cannes city of France from 14 to 25 May. This year, Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia's film 'All We Imagine as Light' will be screened in the festival's prestigious Palme d'Or category.

Why was Cannes established?

  • The objective of the Cannes Film Festival was to promote different types of films and cinematography.
  • In 1939, there was only one Venice Film Festival in the world. In this, Italy's dictator Mussolini and Germany's dictator Adolf Hitler used to give awards to films after consulting each other.

Cinematographer Santosh Sivan will be honored
Apart from this, famous cinematographer and director Santosh Sivan will also be honored in Cannes this year. He will be the first Indian filmmaker to be given the Pierre Angenieux Prize for career achievements in cinematography. 60 year old Santosh has so far won 12 National Film Awards. He was also awarded Padmashree by the Government of India in 2014.
