New Delhi, Leading News Service: Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has hit back at the Congress for criticizing the National Democratic Alliance government over the appointment of interim Lok Sabha Speaker. Rijiju held a press conference and reminded the Congress of the rules of the British Parliament. In 2004, when the Congress government was in power, Rijiju attacked the Congress by saying that Somnath Chatterjee had been chosen in the place of Atal Bihari Vajpayee without seniority.
During the tenure of the previous Lok Sabha, Virendra Kumar, the most senior leader in the House, was given the post of Interim Lok Sabha Speaker. Rijiju explained that Bhatrihari Mehtab, who has now been elected to this post, is also a senior citizen and has been elected to the Lok Sabha 7 times.
The rules that the Congress is relying on for not electing Suresh as temporary Lok Sabha Speaker are applicable in the British Parliament. Even though MP Suresh has been elected to Athavela Lok Sabha, he has not been elected consecutively. There was a break in his MP. Therefore, he also claimed that he was denied the post of Interim Lok Sabha Speaker on the basis of British rules.
In the last Lok Sabha, Veerendra Kumar was given the post of temporary Speaker, at that time there was a demand to give the post of Speaker to Maneka Gandhi. However, he also explained that Maneka Gandhi was not given this post as she was not elected consecutively. In 2004, the Congress had rejected Atal Bihari Vajpayee as interim Lok Sabha Speaker and given it to Somnath Chatterjee. Rijiju alleged that the Congress has broken the tradition of Parliament.
Lok Sabha Speaker's post will be decided with the consent of NDA
Kiren Rijiju informed that while choosing the post of the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha, the name will be decided by taking the opposition parties into confidence. He refused to say anything about who will be appointed to the post. He said that Lok Sabha Speaker will be elected unanimously. Rijiju clarified that there is currently no consideration for the post of Lok Sabha Vice President.
