Asian Wrestling Championships 2024 | India's Udit wins silver at Asian Wrestling Championships; Abhimanyu, bronze to Vicky | leader


Leaders Online: India's 19-year-old Udit won a silver medal in the men's 57 kg category at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2024 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Abhimanyu won bronze medal in men's 70 kg weight category and Vicky in 97 kg weight category. So far, India's medal tally in this tournament has increased to three. A total of five Indian wrestlers entered the arena on Thursday in men's freestyle. But Rohit (67 kg) and Parvinder Singh (79 kg) could not finish on the podium.

Udit, the U20 Asian champion, defeated Iran's Ibrahim Mahdi Khari 10-8 in the qualifiers. He defeated Kyrgyzstan's Almaz Smanbekov 6–4 in the quarterfinals and defeated Kim Kum Hyok of the Democratic Republic of Korea 4–3 in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Kento Yumiya of Japan. However, Yumiya won 5-4 in a close match in the final. Due to this, Udit had to settle for a silver medal.

This is the first time since 2019 that India has not won a gold medal in this category. Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Ravi Dahiya had a hat-trick of gold medals in this category between 2020 and 2022. Aman Sehrawat was the champion of 2023.

Meanwhile, Abhimanyu thrashed Korea's Lee Seungchul 10-0 in the quarterfinals of the 70 kg category. But in the semi-finals, Japan's Yoshinosuke Oyagi defeated him by the same number of points. Abhimanyu then defeated Uzbekistan's Begizon Kuldashev 6-5 in the bronze medal match.

Vicky (97kg) defeated China's Tuerxunbike Muhete 9-6. But in the semi-finals he lost 13-0 against Rizabek Aitmukhan of Kazakhstan. Vicky defeated Andrei Aronov of Kyrgyzstan by a score of 10-1 to win the bronze medal. (Asian Wrestling Championships 2024)

Rohit was defeated 5-3 by Japan's Masanosuke Ono in the bronze medal match in the 65 kg category. While Parvinder Singh lost 3-0 to Japan's Ryunosuke Kamiya in the qualifying round of the 79 kg category.
