Asaduddin Owaisi moves Supreme Court against CAA leader

Leaders Online: MIM President Asaduddin Owaisi has moved the Supreme Court to stay the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 and Rules, 2024. The petition filed by Owaisi said that any application seeking citizenship status cannot be considered or processed by the government during the pendency of proceedings under Section 6B of the Citizenship Act, 1955 (Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019).

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) notification was issued on March 11. This will allow non-Muslim immigrants who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan on or before December 31, 2014 to get citizenship through the CAA. It includes people from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian religions.

But this law is strongly opposed by the opponents. Now Owaisi has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to stay the implementation of the CAA Act. The Muslim community is being planned to be targeted through the NRC, which was updated in 2019, Owaisi said. The Supreme Court will hear these petitions on March 19.

Meanwhile, the Kerala government has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court to stay the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 and the Citizenship Amendment Rules, 2024.

Is CAA anti-Muslim?

MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi had accused the CAA of being “anti-Muslim”. Home Minister Amit Shah gave an answer to this in a recent interview with ANI. He said, “What is his reasoning? Muslims cannot be religiously oppressed. Because Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh have been declared as Islamic countries. There is no provision of NRC in this Act. There is no provision in this Act to deprive anyone of citizenship.”
