Amethi Congress Lok Sabha: Gandhi family retreat from Amethi after 25 years

But in the upcoming Lok Sabha election 2024, after almost 25 years, there will be a non-Gandhi Congress candidate here. Congress party recently L Sharma announced candidature from Amethi. Amethi is considered one of the high profile constituencies in UP. Earlier in 1998 Captain Satish Sharma had contested from this seat from Congress. After 1999, this seat has been continuously contested by the Gandhi family for 25 years. Kishorilal Sharma has been nominated from Amethi in the list announced on Friday (3rd) morning. In the year 1999, Sonia Gandhi contested the first election from Amethi. Later, Sonia Gandhi vacated the seat for her son in 2004. Rahul Gandhi won Lok Sabha elections from Amethi in 2004, 2009 and 2014. But in 2019, Rahul Gandhi was defeated by BJP's Smriti Irani from Amethi constituency. In the year 1998, Captain Satish Sharma, close to the Gandhi family, had contested from this seat. Since then, this seat has been reserved for the Gandhi family for 25 consecutive years. Amethi Congress Lok Sabha : Amethi is the stronghold of the Gandhi family

Congressmen from Amethi were demanding Rahul Gandhi's name to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. However, the name of Sonia Gandhi's confidant Kishori Lal Sharma was announced in the list released on Friday. In the 1976 Lok Sabha elections, the Gandhi family knocked on the door of Amethi. At that time, Sanjay Gandhi reached here and prepared the political ground by donating labor. However, Sanjay Gandhi of Congress was defeated in the first election of 1977. He won the election in 1980. But he died in a plane crash in the same year. He started his political game in the by-elections held after this. Later Rajiv Gandhi won consecutively in 1984, 1989 and 1991.

Rajiv Gandhi's associate Satish managed the legacy

Captain Satish Sharma contested and won the Amethi by-election in 1991 after the death of Rajiv Gandhi. He was included among the close associates of Rajiv Gandhi. In 1996 too, Satish won the election from Congress, but he was defeated in 1998. In 1998 Sanjay Singh of BJP won from Amethi constituency. Then in 1999, Sonia Gandhi contested the first election from Amethi and won. Further, from 2004, Rahul Gandhi was contesting elections from Amethi, a seat inherited by the Gandhi family. Meanwhile, in the wake of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Congress made a change in Amethi and announced the candidacy of Kishorilal Sharma, a close associate of the Gandhi family.
