New Delhi; Leading News Service: Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken strict action against Air India. A fine of Rs 30 lakh has been imposed in connection with the death of an 80-year-old passenger at the Mumbai airport. The elderly passenger had to walk from the plane to the terminal as no wheelchair was available. As a result, the passenger's condition suddenly worsened and he died on the spot. (Air India Fined)
The DGCA had also sent a notice to Air India in this regard and issued a show cause notice to Air India for non-compliance with the relevant provisions. In the wake of the incident, the regulator has directed all airlines to ensure that “adequate wheelchairs are provided for passengers who may require assistance during their journey while boarding or disembarking from the aircraft”. Air India Fined: The old man died on February 16
This incident took place on February 16. Taking immediate action, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had issued a show cause notice to Air India and sought a reply within 7 days. After reviewing the response, the aviation regulator found Air India guilty. The airline's reply to the DGCA said that the passenger's wife was given a wheelchair. The elderly male passenger was asked to wait for a while. Instead of waiting, he chose to walk to the terminal with his wife.
No action was taken by the airline
“Air India has not informed of any action taken by the airline against the erring employees and no corrective action has been taken by the airline to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future,” said a DGCA official. They also failed to show action.
