Leader Online Desk: After the world has fought a terrible epidemic of Corona, now again a terrible disease has spread. In Japan, a disease caused by flesh-eating bacteria, which is more dangerous than Corona, is spreading. The highly dangerous disease has emerged in Japan after the relaxation of Covid-era restrictions. The disease is called Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS) and it can kill the patient within 48 hours.
'These' are the symptoms
According to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, 977 cases of STSS have been reported in Japan as of June 2, compared to 941 last year. A rare flesh-eating bacteria called group A streptococcus (GAS) causes inflammation and sore throat, known as 'strep throat'. According to Bloomberg, these types of bacteria can develop rapidly, causing organ pain, swelling, fever, low blood pressure, which can lead to necrosis, respiratory distress, organ failure, and even death. Ken Kikuchi, a professor of infectious diseases at Tokyo Women's Medical University, said, “The infected patient dies within 48 hours. Initially, the patient's feet are swollen. Swelling then progresses and death occurs within 48 hours.”
People of 'this' age are more at risk
People above 50 years of age are more at risk of this disease. Kikuchi said that at the current rate of infection, the number of cases in Japan could reach 2,500 this year and the death rate could reach 30 percent.
According to Bloomberg, cases of 'streptococcal toxic shock syndrome' have recently been reported in several other countries besides Japan. By the end of 2022, 5 European countries had reported cases of invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) disease to the World Health Organization.
