Proposal for 100% reservation in private sector in Karnataka

Bangalore News Agency : The Karnataka government is considering taking a major decision regarding private sector jobs in the state. The state government is thinking of making it compulsory to recruit 100 percent of locals i.e. Kannadigas for C and D grade posts in the private sector companies that benefit from the concessions of the state government and to make it mandatory to recruit disabled people for 5 percent of the posts.

State Labor Minister Santosh Lad held a closed-door meeting with Labor Department officials on Thursday regarding the proposed Karnataka Industrial Employment Act, 2024, which provides reservation in jobs in private companies. A proposal in this regard is likely to be presented in the next meeting of the Cabinet.

More than 50 workers are required

Reservation will be made compulsory by implementing the Reservation in Jobs Act. The approval of the state cabinet is required for this. Minister Lad said that this law will be mandatory in companies which have more than 50 workers. Former Union Minister Sarojini Mahishi, the head of the Commission, which was set up in 1984, in a report submitted in 1986, expressed the need for 85 percent reservation for Kannadigas in employment.
In the background of the demand that Kannadigas should be given 100 percent reservation in employment, in 2019, the state government issued an order to give preference to Kannadigas in employment in the private sector. But it was not implemented as the percentage was not mentioned.

In Maharashtra, 80 percent directed to Dhaka

• The then Maha Vikas Aghadi government tried to introduce a law of 80 percent reservation for locals in private sectors in Maharashtra. However, due to the Kovid epidemic, this law could not be implemented. The then Industries Minister Subhash Desai had directed the private establishments in the state to reserve 80 percent seats for locals. But this directive was not followed.
