Leaders Online Desk: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday admitted that Pakistan had violated the 1999 Lahore Declaration Agreement with India. which was signed by him and the then Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee. “It was our fault,” he said, indirectly referring to the Kargil war during the time of General Pervez Musharraf.

Nawaz Sharif at a meeting of his party Pakistan Muslim League-N targeted General Pervez Musharraf in connection with the Kargil war. He said, on May 28, 1998, Pakistan conducted five nuclear tests. Then Atal Bihari Vajpayee came here and made an agreement with us, but we violated that agreement, it was our fault.

What was the Lahore Agreement of 1999?

Nawaz Sharif and Atal Bihari Vajpayee signed the Lahore Declaration on 21 February 1999 after the summit. The agreement was signed for peace between the two countries, but a few months later the Kargil War broke out when Pakistan invaded the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. Since March 1999, Pervez Musharraf has been a general of the Pakistan Army, having ordered a secret army incursion into the Kargil district of Ladakh. Later the war started and India won the war, Sharif was the prime minister of Pakistan at that time.

Clinton's offer of 5 billion US dollars

Pakistan on Tuesday celebrated the 26th anniversary of its first nuclear test in 1998. Pakistan conducted six nuclear tests on 28 May 1998 in the Chaghi Hills of Balochistan province. The then US President Bill Clinton offered five billion US dollars to Pakistan to stop it from conducting nuclear tests. But I rejected it, Nawaz Sharif has said that if a person like Imran Khan had been the Prime Minister of Pakistan in my place, I would have accepted Clinton's offer. After six years, Nawaz Sharif was elected unopposed as the president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz on Tuesday. Nawaz had to leave the post after the Supreme Court's verdict in the Panama Papers case.
