New Delhi; Leading News Service: The Election Commission on Tuesday (21st) has decided to ban the BJP candidate from campaigning for 24 hours for using abusive language against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

This action has been taken against Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former judge of Kolkata High Court and BJP candidate for Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency. During the election campaign, Gangopadhyay had cast aspersions on Mamata Banerjee's character and made a low-level personal criticism of her. Therefore, the Trinamool Congress filed a complaint with the Election Commission against Gopadhyay. A complaint was filed on May 17. Taking cognizance of this complaint, the Election Commission decided to impose a 24-hour campaign ban on Gangopadhyay.

What is the Election Commission's opinion?

Gangopadhyay's language is indecent and insulting to the traditions of West Bengal. The Election Commission has said that using abusive language against an honorable woman is unacceptable.
