Baba Ramdev, Balakrishna should issue a public apology within a week: Supreme Court directive leader

Leader Online Desk: The Supreme Court today (April 16) granted a week's time to yoga guru Ramdev, his associate Balkrishna and Patanjali Ayurveda to issue a public apology in the misleading advertisement case. Both Ramdev and Balkrishna were present during the hearing and personally tendered an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court. A bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah took note of their apology, but clarified that we have not decided to grant any relief at this stage.

But you cannot ignore allopathy

While discussing with Balakrishna, the bench told him, 'You are doing good work, but you cannot disparage allopathy.' Baba Ramdev said that I do not intend to disrespect the court in any way.

You are not so innocent that….

“They (Patanjali) are not so innocent that they do not know what the Supreme Court has said in its earlier order in the matter,” the bench told Balakrishna.

Hearing will be held on April 23 in the case of Patanjali misleading advertisement

The hearing in Patanjali's misleading advertisement case will now be held on April 23. The Supreme Court has directed Baba Ramdev and Patanjali MD Acharya Balkrishna to appear in the court on that day. Earlier on Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard the matter. During the hearing, Mukul Rohatgi told the court that Ramdev wants to publicly apologize in this case. On this, Justice Hima Kohli said that the court wants to hear what Ramdev and Balkrishna have to say. They should appear in court.

The Supreme Court had on April 10 rejected the unconditional pardon of Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna. A bench of Justices Kohli and Amanulla had come down on Patanjali Ayurveda. “We are not blind. We refuse to accept the apology,” the apex court had reprimanded yoga guru Ramdev and MD Acharya Balkrishna of Patanjali Ayurveda Limited.

what is the matter

Patanjali claimed in its advertisement that yoga could 'completely cure' asthma and diabetes. In November 2023 last year, a petition was filed against this advertisement by senior advocate PS Patwalia of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). The Supreme Court had directed the Center to issue consultations and guidelines on misleading advertisements. In the hearing held on November 21, 2023, the lawyer representing the company had assured the Supreme Court that there would be no further violation of the law.

What is the charge of IMA?

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) alleged that Patanjali had run a smear campaign against the Covid-19 vaccination. The court had warned that the false and misleading advertisements of Patanjali Ayurveda should be stopped immediately. A fine of up to one crore rupees was envisaged for each product falsely claiming to treat certain diseases. Baba Ramdev, who is facing criminal cases filed by the IMA for his controversial comments on allopathic pharmaceuticals during the Covid-19 pandemic, had moved the Supreme Court to quash the cases.
