Nana Patekar and Raj Kumar worked together in the 1993 film Tiranga. This film was directed by Mehul Kumar.
It is often said that a director's job is only to say the cut, but his responsibility is much more than this. From the making of the film till its release, the director has to work in different departments.
It is very important for a director to have knowledge of everything including writing, editing, photography. That is why it would not be wrong to call the director the captain of the ship.
In this episode of Reel to Real, we will understand the role of the director in film making. For this we talked to directors Tushar Hiranandani and Mehul Kumar. Tusshar has directed Rajkumar Rao's recent film Srikanth. Mehul Kumar is known for films like Tiranga, Krantiveer, Mrityudata.
It is important for the director to choose the right script to make a film. Making of a film can start only when the director has a very good story (script). There should be a lot of newness in the subject of that story. The director should not be hasty at all in choosing the story.
It takes 2-3 years to make a film. In such a situation, the makers should keep in mind that the story of the film should be new and different for the people in the coming 2-3 years or even after that.
The directors select the lead actors of the film, the responsibility of selecting the side actors rests with the casting director. Directors are also involved in the casting of actors for films. Regarding this, Tushar says, 'I have full participation in the casting of actors. The main casting of a film or any web series is done by me in collaboration with the casting director, but the casting of side actors or background actors is entirely the responsibility of the casting director.
Like in the film Srikanth, apart from the main lead, the entire casting was done by Abhimanyu. He had done better casting. Many new faces have been seen in the film, but everyone did a good job.
The director cannot do the casting of all the people for the film alone. He has to concentrate on other things. In such a situation, we have to trust the casting director.
The director also decides on which day, when and where the shooting will take place. If the shooting of a film starts without proper planning, there is always loss. For the film to break records and earn at the box office, the pre-production work should be done in the best possible manner.
Suppose, if the film is to be shot at an outdoor location, then first of all the director along with other people makes a complete chart of the outdoor location. How many shots are there in the outdoor shoot, how many songs are there, all these things are written in the chart. In this chart, the clothes are also detailed according to each scene. The rest of the accounts of every small and big thing related to the shooting are kept in that chart.
Regarding this, Tushar said, 'The shooting of a film cannot begin without proper preparation. For example, a month before the shooting starts, I sit with my entire team and completely revise the script. So that everyone knows which shot has to be filmed on which day or what will be the first and last shot.
The director should work in collaboration with the producer. Mehul Kumar told that before the shooting of the film starts, there is an agreement between the director and the producer. Everything related to fees is written in this agreement. After this the producer and director work like a family.
He further said that in film making it is necessary for the director and producer to work together.
The director gets fees according to the schedule of the film. Mehul also talked about fee distribution. Explaining through an example, he said, suppose the shooting of the film is being completed in 6 schedules, then the producers pay the director's fees little by little in these 6 schedules. Then the remaining payment is given to the director before the release of the film.
However, the method of exchange of money between the producer and the director varies from project to project.
Many times producers pay fees to the director in the beginning. At the same time, sometimes the director gets fees after the shooting of the film is over.
When Govinda refused to shoot, director Mehul saved the film from being closed. Govinda worked in the film 'Aasmaan Se Uncha'. The last action sequence of the film was to be shot in Kashmir. It was very cold and the shooting date had also been extended, so Govinda was not ready to stay in Kashmir. The film's director Mehul requested him a lot, but he did not agree.
If Mehul had left the film incomplete, it would have caused great loss. In such a situation, he came up with an idea. He shot that action sequence with Govinda's body double. The close-up shots of the scene were shot with Govinda in Filmcity, Mumbai. It was the wisdom of director Mehul that he saved the film from being ruined.
Mehul further said – We have filmed that scene in such a way that even today people do not realize that some part of the scene was shot in Filmcity.
This scene was shot in Kashmir and Filmcity.
Nana did not want to work with Raj Kumar The film 'Tiranga' proved to be an important film in Nana's career which was released in 1993. In this he played the role of Inspector Wagle. On his casting, the film's director Mehul Kumar said, 'My first choice for the role of Inspector Wagle was Rajinikanth. He also liked the story, but refused to do the film.
He said – The subject is good, my character is also powerful, my name has also been kept, but I am not in my mind to work with Rajkumar. After this, Naseeruddin Shah was approached, then he refused and said – Mehul ji, I will not get along with Raj Saheb.
After this, Nana was offered, he agreed to the film as soon as he heard the story, but he said that if Raj ji interferes in the film, he will leave the shooting.
I called Raj ji and told him about Nana's casting. On this he said- He misbehaves. Abuses on the set. There will be trouble with him. Well, if it's okay, then let's do the film.
On this casting, a renowned producer-director associated with the industry expressed concern on the very day of the auspicious time and said that God forbid that your tricolor flutters. I am worried that you have decided to make a film in six months by casting one from the East and the other from the West.
Initially, Rajkumar and Nana Patekar used to sit separately after giving the shot, but after the song 'Pee Le Pee Le O Mere Raja…' was picturized, both of them became friends. After this, both of them became good friends till the filming of the climax. The film also became a superhit after its release.

The director had dressed Nana in old clothes in the film Nana Patekar also worked in Mehul's film Krantiveer. While narrating the story of this film, the director said – In today's time, actors select their clothes themselves, earlier this did not happen. Nana's look in the film Krantiveer was a bit of a fakir. In such a situation, I told Nana that you should wear all your old clothes in the film, which will not even be pressed. I will get new clothes made in exchange for that. He happily accepted this demand of mine.
Shatrughan Sinha, who always reaches late on the set, reached the shooting on time on Mehul's insistence. This story was very famous in the industry that Shatrughan Sinha never came on time for shooting. Regarding this, Mehul said- He had worked with me in the film Naisafi. One day the producer of the film said that if everyone comes on time, then why doesn't Sinha Saheb come. I did not give any answer to this.
One day, as soon as I saw an opportunity, I went to meet Sinha Saheb. I told him that such things happen on the set that you do not come on time. It is not good if people say this. For this reason, your shoot tomorrow will be at 11 am, so please come. He accepted what I said.
When I told this to the production team, everyone was surprised. Everyone said that he would not come on time, but when Sinha Saheb reached the set at 10:30 am the next day, everyone was stunned.
However, later Sinha Saheb told me that it was okay for one day, but do not keep shooting like this every day.
