Hema fulfilled the dream her mother had dreamed of. Hema Malini's mother Jai Lakshmi wanted to become a classical dancer, but due to the burden of family and marriage responsibilities, her dream remained unfulfilled. For this reason, she decided even before Hema's birth that whatever work she could not do, her daughter would do it. Ultimately this is what happened. Jai Lakshmi gave birth to daughter Hema on the occasion of Dussehra. Interestingly, Jai Lakshmi had decided to name her daughter Hema even before birth.
Hema followed her mother's advice and started preparing to become a classical dancer from an early age. This was the reason why his childhood was not spent like that of normal children.
In an interview he had said, 'I started dancing at an early age. Although I didn't want to dance all the time. She wanted to play like other children. Standing near the window, staring at the passers-by, lounging here and there, listening to the gossip of old women and spending time with my brothers, I very much felt like doing all this. Hema Malini saw Dharmendra for the first time at a movie premiere. Hema was fascinated the moment she saw him. Hema had told in an interview that she had not seen any person more beautiful than Dharmendra. The pair were seen together for the first time in the 1970 film Tum Haseen Main Jawaan.
