In the year 1987, it was announced to give Dadasaheb Phalke Award posthumously to Prithviraj Kapoor. His son Raj Kapoor had come to receive the award in his place at the award ceremony held on 2 May 1988. At that time, Raj Kapoor was so ill that he was sitting in the ceremony wearing an oxygen mask, carrying an oxygen cylinder with him. When Prithviraj Kapoor's name was announced, Raj Kapoor's condition deteriorated so much that he could not get up from the chair. In such a situation, President R. Venkatraman broke the protocol of the ceremony and personally went to his chair and gave the award.
